Del Rio, TX—February 23, 2016 On February 22, 2016 a storm containing large amounts of hail and heavy winds swept through Del Rio and has virtually left the entire city without electricity. AEP is working vigorously to restore power to all areas of town. Some areas around the airport have electricity, but many customers are still without power.
One of the AEP substations sustained heavy damage due to the storm, thus affecting other substations in the area. As of 8:44 a.m., 99.1 percent of Val Verde County is without power (www.aeptexas.com). As of this time, we still do not have an exact estimate when all areas of the city will have power restored.
The supply of water is safe to drink; however, the City of Del Rio is asking its citizens to be conservative while using water in the event electricity is not restored to all areas of town in a timely manner. The City cannot produce or distribute additional water to its storage tanks without electricity. If pressure continues to diminish, a boil water notification will be issued.
Red Cross is currently in town assessing the damage the storm has caused to the area. The City’s Civic Center is open as a shelter to all those displaced by the storm.
Please stay tuned for more updates and information.
